DESPATCH High athletes have excelled in recent meetings, bagging a host of medals at the weekend and winning an event in Cradock.
The school sent 20 athletes to compete in the Jim Fouche meeting in Bloemfontein at the weekend, where the pupils compete in the age group for which they qualify next year.
The team secured a total of 17 medals, including five golds. First places went to Shaun Jansen (hammer throw, 56.62m), Tamlyn Leonard (hammer throw, 42.32m), Bianka Blom (hammer throw, 53.90m, a meeting record), Chante Robertson (triple jump, 9.9m) and Heinrich Willemse (400m, 55.79).
Included in the Despatch team were three athletes from the primary schools in the town, two of whom won gold medals.
They were Sonop Grade 7 pupil Hanno du Plessis (hammer throw, 41.59, a meeting record) and Sharlene de Jager, in Grade 7 at Frans Conradie (shot put, 11.35, a meeting record).
In the Cradock Top 10 meeting – restricted to schools from the three Cape provinces – Despatch’s athletes came first.
They were followed by PW Botha, in George, and Diamantveld, in Kimberley, third.
Despatch have produced two South African schools representatives this year, with Mieke Stander and Bianca Blom winning national colours in overseas meetings.
