EASTERN Cape surfers are gearing up for a new challenge when the Billabong NMMU Surf Contest is held at the Pipe in Summerstrand tomorrow.
The inaugural competition caters for surfers in various categories, starting with boys in the 16-18 division. The other categories are Open male (19-29), Open female (19-29) and Masters male (30 and older).
The NMMU Surfing Club has excelled in recent varsity competitions and its members will be looking forward to the contest.
EP Surfing will assist in the organisation of the event and it is hoped it will become a permanent part of the calendar. The entry fee is R50 for NMMU students (R60 for others).
The NMMU club has created two special divisions to be part of the day, which are restricted to NMMU staff and students.
A learn-to-surf division will be held, with boards and wetsuits provided. A maximum of 10 surfers can enter and registration will take place tomorrow at 11am.
There will be a social division for non-affiliated members who have never surfed competitively. Registration for this division will be at noon. The entry fee for these two divisions are free.
Prizes will be given to the first four places in each division, and there will be floating trophies for the Open categories.
