Subs make it six in a row with Rovers win

SUBS goalkeeper Lwando Nkohla kept his sixth straight clean sheet on Saturday when the log-leaders beat Fairview Rovers 2-0 in a Safa-NMB SAB League match played at the Saints field in Gelvandale.

After the Motherwell outfit scored what was then regarded a shock 4-0 win over pre-season favourites Lion City in their opening fixture, they have never looked back and are the only team in the league with a 100% record, scoring 14 goals without reply.

"Winning six matches in a row without conceding a goal cannot be a fluke," Subs boss Bongo Zondani said.

"The boys are not taking anything for granted and their hard work and dedication is paying off.

"Although the NU9 Stadium is our home ground, the boys train under the most atrocious conditions in NU2. The field is so bad we are constantly having to repair or replace balls."

On Saturday, Rovers managed to keep Subs at bay for 75 minutes before Ludwe Sonjica cracked their defence. Five minutes before the final whistle Vuyisani Masupa sealed the three points. Meanwhile it was third time lucky for second-placed Callies when they beat Hotspurs 1-0 at the Westbourne Oval. The Spurs won both their previous encounters.

Callies' leading goalscorer John Giannakis turned provider when Razaan Safedien latched onto his low cross to round the keeper for the only goal of the match in the first half.

Lion City leapfrogged Despatch Pioneers into third place with a 2-0 win over Showvillage United.

City went into the break leading 1-0 when Vuysile Manxoyi caught the Pioneers keeper flatfooted with a cracker from outside the area. The pre-season favourites took command in the second half with Mihlali Mkonto sealing the match.

Peace United scored their first win of the season when they beat Despatch Pioneers 2-1 at the Walmer High School field. A goal by Vuyani Klaas saw United lead 1-0 at the break. Melumzi Jacons pulled one back for the visitors after the break. Mzwandile Ngqishi broke the deadlock to give United a well-deserved win.

Central Acemates scored their biggest win of the season when they beat Motherwell Academy 3-1 in a Pefa derby.
