Coach pleased with Warriors' game

CHEVROLET Warriors coach Piet Botha was pretty satisfied with how his team performed in their two-day Friendship Cup cricket match which finished at St George's Park yesterday.

As far as pre-season friendlies go, the Warriors will have been happy to get some practice in against a fellow franchise team.

There was never likely to be a result over the two days and as matters turned out, both sides managed to bat only once, with the Knights making 327 yesterday in reply to the Warriors' 303 all out on day one.

Knights and Proteas batsman Dean Elgar starred initially with a mature 100 off 153 balls and then Colin Ingram came to the fore in the afternoon taking five wickets with his leg-spinners. Botha said: "It's about getting level up in cricket. We played inter-squad matches last week, but it's never the same as playing against another franchise."

He was full of praise for opener Jon-Jon Smuts, who made 131 on the opening day after having to endure a frustratingly dry spell last season.

The teams will play the first of two 50-over matches at the same venue today.
