Border paddlers take honours

BORDER Canoe Club’s paddlers produced outstanding performances to win the annual Jumbo Eastern Cape Intercity Championship in Port Alfred at the weekend.

A total of 217 paddlers competed, with Border Canoe Cub winning the day with a record 450 points to clinch the Sisteen Trophy.

The doubles race was superbly taken by Port Elizabeth’s Ryan Louw and Straight Laing.

Border made a clean sweep of the men’s and women’s singles and mixed doubles through Steve Woods and Nicky Callebaut, and Duncan Boyd and Daynie Loots respectively.

Port Alfred has successfully hosted the race for 29 years and the event attracts paddlers from East London, Cradock, Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown.

The youngest competitors in the event are as young as eight while the oldest are the great-grandmasters category at 65 and over.

The newly formed Kowie Canoe Club will host the event next year.
