THE NMMU Madibaz maintained their unbeaten record in the Varsity Football Challenge when they defeated the University of Witwatersrand 4-1 at NMMU last night.

The PE varsity started the match like a house on fire when Leroy van Rensburg scored the opening goal in the third minute.

Striker Lindsay Stowman doubled NMMU’s score, while the visitors scored their goal before the break through a header by Tshepo Motsukunyane.

Wits were unlucky not to level the score in the first half when Bandile Mathandela sent a shot over the crossbar.

After receiving a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, Van Rensburg came back in the second half to register his second goal after his long range short was misjudged by Wits goalkeeper Phiweyo Hlophe.

Cornelius Matuoane constantly threatened the Wits defence to strike the fourth goal of the match for the Madibaz.

The Wits midfielders pushed forward in search for goals, but their strikers lacked the finishing touch and they kept giving up possession.

Wits were convinced they would bounce, but the Madibaz continually cut down their efforts.

Madibaz played defensively towards the end of the game, but Wits could find no way through.

This was NMMU’s first home game of the tournament. Their next match will be against Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria on August 26.

The home side supporters braved the cold weather to support their winning team and were well rewarded by the Madibaz.
