Bad day for EP at Craven Week

EASTERN Province suffered a disastrous day at the Coca-Cola Craven Week yesterday, with both of their teams defeated.

The EP Country Districts team was competitive in going down 26-20 to the Griffons, but the Eastern Province side was overwhelmed 40-14 by SWD.

In the earlier game, the Griffons created a deserved 14-0 lead in the first quarter, and although the Country Districts scored before half-time through hooker Thomas Filmer (St Andrew’s), the side could not catch up on the scoreboard.

Penalties at scrum time and multiple errors allowed the Griffons to play in their opponents’ half and they used the chances to knock the three points over.

With time up on the clock, the Country Districts showed good spirit with a consolation score through outside centre Robert Ball (St Andrew’s). Flanker Nelius van Heerden (Marlow) had a noteworthy game at ruck time.

The next match was not as evenly contested as SWD winger Duhan van der Merwe’s (Outeniqua) two tries in the first half, and Donovan van den Berg’s (Oakdale) after the break, gave a 21-0 score.

Despite a try from Erich de Jager (Brandwag), EP’s game breakers just did not show the same dominance as SWD.

SWD flyhalf and man of the match Dewald Human (Outeniqua) put in a great performance. EP No8 Martin Groenewald (Grey) and scrumhalf Luciano Daniels (Otto du Plessis) were the standouts for the side.
