DEFENDING champions Western Province and title rivals KwaZulu-Natal remained on a Jarvis Cup collision course after both teams registered solid wins on the third day of the Investec SA squash interprovincial at Old Grey yesterday.
The Natalians, thanks to a full haul of 20 points against Border, extended their lead to six points over the Cape outfit, but they have two tough matches to finish, as they play Central Gauteng today and WP tomorrow.
Rodney Durbach’s WP side will be looking for a big haul against Border today before facing their closest rivals at Londt Park tomorrow in what should be the tournament decider.
In the women’s Kaplan Cup, hosts Eastern Province were pleased to score their first win of the week, defeating KwaZulu- Natal 15-6, while Western Province strengthened their grip on proceedings with a third straight win.
From a domestic point of view, Eastern Province teams are doing well in the lower sections.
The EP men’s A team made it three wins in a row by defeating WP B in the B section yesterday, topping their pool and qualifying for today’s cross-pool playoffs.
There promises to be a fascinating playoff clash in the men’s D section where EP C, who topped their pool, come up against their D team provincial colleagues.
EP B also topped their pool in the women’s B section and will be keen to qualify for tomorrow’s final in today’s playoffs.
The Landman sisters, Elani and Lumé, set up EP’s win over KwaZulu-Natal yesterday and Anlen Murray, playing at No5, secured the result with a 3-0 win. It was an encouraging effort after some close encounters in the opening two rounds.
WP, however, are strongly placed on the overall log and have built up a 12-point lead over second-placed Central Gauteng, who bounced back from Tuesday’s loss to Northerns with a solid 17-5 win over SA Country Districts yesterday.
