THREE Port Elizabeth pupils were selected to represent South Africa at the Zone Six Karate Championship starting in Namibia today.

Andrew Rabie’s Bradwill Meyer, 17, Framesby High’s Andries Smit, 15, and Ian Joel, 11, of Morewag, are all members of the Dragon Suburbs Dojo in Linton Grange.

The three were chosen at the national championship trials hosted in Durban last month.

Meyer and Smit will also represent South Africa at the sixth WKF Youth Cup in Greece from July 1-8.

Dojo instructor sensei Shaun Kapp said: “It makes me very proud to see my karatekas take a further successful step in the sport because some of them have been with the dojo for more than eight years. It took me a long time preparing them to wear the SA colours and I’m fortunate to have this group of three members in the national team for their first time.”

Smit said he was surprised to hear his name called when the team was selected.

“I was shocked but excited at the same time, and I will do my best to be in the top three.”
