IN DIFFICULT conditions, Kingswood overcame Alexander Road 3-0 in their schoolgirls’ hockey match in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.
A strong wind and driving rain made it tough for both sides. Kingswood played with determination as they attacked the Alexander Road goal relentlessly in the first half.
The pressure eventually paid off when Celeste du Toit drove a ball into the Alexander circle for the ball to deflect off the goalkeeper for a goal.
Kingswood continued to attack, with Erin Shillaw, Ella Wright and Beauty Graham often threatening, although they could not break down the solid Alex defence.
The Kingswood midfield of Jade Hart, Celeste du Toit, Aimee-Leigh Pote, Hannah Knott-Craig and Shannon Arnold linked well with their strikers as Kingswood dominated the territory in the first half.
This pressure led to a well-taken short corner which resulted in a penalty flick being awarded to Kingswood. Du Toit stepped up to the penalty spot to convert the flick, putting Kingswood 2-0 ahead at halftime.
The second half saw Kingswood playing into the teeth of the wind. Alexander Road started to apply pressure of their own in this half as they attacked the Kingswood goal.
However, led by captain Lauren Bennett, Michaela Hart, Kate and Jessica Sheard and Fikile Mahlati proved solid in the Kingswood defence. The backs were able to feed the links who released a quick ball to their strikers.
This created an opportunity for Shillaw to beat the Alexander Road defence and then the goalkeeper to seal the match 3-0.
