Citizens ready to tackle city

PORT Elizabeth is getting ready for the third edition of the popular Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run, in which participants from all walks of life are drawn to the streets of the CBD to tackle a fun 10km obstacle course and raise funds for Bay charities.

A festival of activities has been planned for the event, hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), which will be held at the Donkin Reserve over the weekend of September 14 to15.

A kids’ fun run will be held at 3pm on the Saturday and the feature Urban Run will take place on the Sunday at 9am.

“We look forward to another great Urban Festival and anticipate a sell- out this year.

“Already 500 entries have been snapped up since we opened on Saturday morning,” event organiser Mike Zoetmulder of Zports said.

“The Urban Run is a fantastic fun charity event which draws thousands of people back to the streets of our CBD to witness the fantastic urban renewal which is taking place.”

The concept, introduced to PE in 2011, is popular around the world, as thousands of participants enjoy the camaraderie and excitement of running through the city streets and tackling urban obstacles along the way.

This often includes scaling walls, crawling in pipes and running through buildings, often in groups.

The 2012 Urban Run attracted more than 1200 participants and raised in excess of R209000 for charity.

This year, Khaya Cheshire and Cleft Friends have been nominated as the charities for the feature event.

The Scouts of Nelson Mandela Bay are the beneficiary for the Kids Urban Run.

The Urban Run, hosted by the MBDA and supported by The Herald, Kingfisher FM and iStream Brand Management, also brings an Urban Festival to the Donkin Reserve over the weekend, with plenty of entertainment, vendors and exhibitors to keep the crowds happy.

The popular event also attracts companies to sponsor the various obstacles along the route, adding a Mardi Gras-like atmosphere.
