Ndzondelelo in sweet victory

Mthetho Ndoni

NDZONDELELO High ended a seven-year losing streak with a 14-13 win over arch-rivals Ithembelihle Comprehensive School in their FNB Classic Clash schools rugby match at Dan Qeqe Stadium at the weekend.

With the fans packing the stadium, Ndzondelelo crossed the line first with a try by wing Amangile Ngwane, converted by Siyabonga Ngcaba.

Ithembelihle hit back in an even contest when Diva Busakwe crossed for a try.

After a halftime lead of 7-5, Ndzondelelo increased their intensity, but Ithembelihle also came out with all guns blazing and Anele Gans came close to scoring.

Ithembe were guilty of some errors and Ndzondelelo increased their lead when Thandolwethu Mhlaba scored and Ngcaba’s conversion made it 14-5.

Siyabonga Mteto then kicked a penalty for Ithembe to make it 14-8 and in the last minutes of the match, Ithembe’s Slovo Dzaka crossed for a try, but the conversion failed to give Ndzondelelo a narrow 14-13 victory.

St Andrew’s v Grey

AN outstanding first half, which saw them score three tries, set Grey High up for a 39-14 win over St Andrew’s in Grahamstown.

The visiting backline set the tone of the match when some fine inter-play by the backs saw wing Luca Dalla Vecchia cross for a try, converted by Garrick Mattheus.

The PE team kept up the pressure and further tries came from Angus van Niekerk and Gerrit Huisamen.

Dalla Vecchia then showed his pace to race down the touchline for a 29-0 lead before St Andrew’s hit back with a strong lineout drive for Tyler Paul to score, converted by Ryan Horne.

Another penalty by Mattheus and Dalla Vecchia’s third try pushed the score out to 39-7 before No8 Stuart Stopforth crashed over for the home side, Horne again kicking the conversion.

Brandwag v Framesby

TWO tries in the last five minutes clinched a dramatic 29-26 victory for Framesby over home side Brandwag in Uitenhage.

Brandwag would feel it was the one that got away as they were leading for most of the match, but a late surge by Framesby saw fullback Divo Welgemoed score the winning try in the last move of the match.

The battle between the two talented flyhalves, Ernst Stapelberg (Framesby) and Malcolm Jaer, was one of the highlights of the match.

Stapelberg gave a polished performance and Jaer kept the defence guessing with his attacking skills, scoring his team’s first try.

Westering v Muir

MUIR College ran in four tries to one to beat home side Westering High 29-7, opening their account in the fourth minute through a try by wing Leigh-Angus Nell.

Further tries from Nell and flank Sibabalwe Jikani, plus two conversions and a penalty from flyhalf Ruben de Vos completed Muir’s scoring in the first half.

Westering did manage the odd raid into Muir’s 22m area and one such attack resulted in a try for flyhalf Malford Damens which he converted himself.

The only points in the second half came via a try by left wing Xolela Daniels and a conversion by De Vos.
