PORT Elizabeth soccer outfit Bay Stars defeated Lusikisiki side Champion FC 2-0 in a Safa Eastern Cape Second Division league match at the Westbourne Oval on Friday.
Stars’ striker Orlin Powell opened the scoring in the 20th minute of the first half after receiving a cross inside the penalty area, seizing the opportunity to beat the visitors’ defence.
Leroy van Rensburg was introduced in the second half of the game and he doubled the score in the 80th minute.
Both teams started the match at high pace but the home side dominated the first 25 minutes of the game.
Champion FC lost concentration after conceding the first goal but Stars failed to convert their chances.
Stars went into the break leading 1-0.
Champion came back strongly in the second half in search of an equaliser, but they made mistakes at the back which eventually caused them to be punished by the second goal.
Second-placed Stars closed the gap between themselves and logleaders Mthatha Bucks to one point. The home side now have 53 points from 23 games, while Bucks are leading with 54 points from 22 games.
Stars team manager Nicholas Myataza said: “We are happy with the three points even though the score could have been higher. We missed so many scoring chances in the first half.
“We want to dethrone the top team from the number one spot because our mandate is to win the promotion playoff game to make the National First Division next season.”
