NMMU aim to maintain squash dominance

NMMU will be looking to extend a successful winning streak in Eastern Province league squash when they begin the defence of their men’s First League title against Westview at Westview on Tuesday.

The varsity club have not featured in many league triumphs for many years, but since capturing the Super League title last year, they have dominated the top flight in EP squash, winning the 2012 winter league crown and defending the Super League triumph last month.

With Jason le Roux a powerful No1 and the talented Kyle Schwarz at two, NMMU are exceptionally strong and that pair have been well backed up by Jarryd Terblanche, Johan Thiel and Andre Labuschagne.

They should start as favourites, but Westview, with a potent No1 in Zane Schwarz, and Londt Park, who are fielding two teams, will also want to have a say in the final destination of the title. Londt Park are in for an interesting season. They have usually chosen a strong A side, with Rudi van Niekerk at No1.

But this year Van Niekerk will be heading up a team in what surely must be a unique situation where all four members are from the same family. Rudi will be joined by dad Anton and siblings Lizelle and Dewald to make up the V team.

Londt Park A will be spearheaded by Quintin Masters, whose preparations have been somewhat disrupted by his impending marriage tomorrow.
