Graeme snatch win in schools thriller

GRAEME College defeated old rivals Kingswood by two wickets in a thrilling schools cricket encounter at Graeme in Grahamstown on Saturday.

Facing the visitors’ total of 199, Graeme snatched victory by two wickets by getting a single to third man off the last ball of the game.

Batting first, Kingswood were in the pound seats in this declaration match with their total on 174 for four, but then Graeme struck in what turned out to be a match-winning effort by taking the last six wickets for 25 runs. Mike Hansel top-scored for Kingswood with a well-played 59.

Gordon-Wayne Plaatjies led the way for the home side with superb figures of five for 25, getting good support from Abongile Hashe (2/29) and Siphosethu Pinini (2/46).

Pinini then confirmed his all-round credentials, top-scoring with 62 to help his team to a memorable win. Hashe also played a critical role with his 31 not out.

To their credit, the Kingswood bowlers toiled tirelessly to keep Graeme under pressure, with Brad Haller taking three for 28.

Graeme, though, held their nerve and were full value for their win.

With their pride hurt, Kingswood showed their character on Sunday when they beat a strong Cuylerville team by 49 runs.

On two occasions, they found themselves under the whip. With their score on 88 for three after 25 overs, Marco Lombard took control to hit his second century for the first team, before they again slumped to 175 for seven. Then Anelisa Mteto belted 55 off 31 balls to help Kingswood reach 295.

Cuylerville started strongly, but the Kingswood bowlers kept their patience and eventually dismissed the club side for 246.
