Grey High athletes on right track

WHILE Queen's College continued their remarkable domination of the Hirsch Shield athletics competition by winning it for the 12th year in a row, Grey High showed they had a bright future by excelling in the under-16 and under-14 divisions.

Last year, the Port Elizabeth school won the Sammy Gunn U14 title in Grahamstown, and in East London last weekend many of those athletes helped Grey to share the U16 SF Edwards Shield with Selborne.

Grey dominated the Sammy Gunn competition again last weekend, retaining the title with a haul of 65 points, well ahead of second-placed Queen's (50) and Selborne in third on 36½ points.

Among those to catch the eye were U14 field athlete Gerik Rautenbach, who won the javelin as well as the shot put (by 3m) and the discus (by 8m).

Aya Matroos won the 400m and Dylan Findlay both the 800m and the 1500m.

In the U16 SF Edwards competition, Grey and Selborne ended on 57½ points each, with Queen's third on 39 points.

Major contributors for Grey were Aidan Tuohy (first in the 200m), Kyle Biddulph (first in the javelin and second in the high jump) and Jonathan Cherrington (first in the pole vault). The U16 team also won the field events trophy. The best Grey performers in the U19 Hirsch Shield were Dylan Vermaak (first in the 200m and third in the 100m), Stephan Ebersohn (second in shot put), Gerrit Huisamen (second in discus) and Luca Dalla Vechia (third in long jump).

Grey (41 points) ended fifth in the Hirsch Shield, behind Queen's (65), Selborne (43), and St Andrew's and Kingswood, joint third on 42.
