Record entry on cards

SUNDAY’S round two of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series in Port Elizabeth is expected to draw a record entry and another exciting tussle between the undefeated women’s champion and a young up-and-coming challenger.

The two, Lisa Bright and Jade Hook, have gone head-to- head over the course for the past year.

Top Port Elizabeth allround athlete Bright has made the Triathlon Summer Series her own since 2010, extending her lead to seven wins last Sunday with a top-10 overall finish in round one to take the women’s category in a fast one hour, 14 minutes.

Bright, 30, also the reigning Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run champion, is looking stronger than ever this season but is only too aware of the challenge from professional show jumper Hooke.

Hooke, 22, has been runner- up for the past four Summer Series events, having come into the series in round three in 2010, when she was third. Since then she has been the sole challenger to Bright’s series domination.

Similarly in the men’s category, EP triathlon champion Dan Howitz started the defence of his series title with another win last Sunday, following his two wins last season, while Ryan Peter is searching for the form that saw him win round three in 2010. After that victory, Peter came second throughout the series in 2011 and again last Sunday.

Despite the strong challengers on the leaderboard, the appeal of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series is its fun atmosphere which attracts social and novice triathletes each year.

Whether it is families or friends combining to form a team or a budding future Ironman, the series offers participants the opportunity to challenge themselves with a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run.

Online registration for round two can be done at closes on Friday. Late entries will be taken on Sunday morning at Pollok Beach from 7am.

The triathlon starts at 8am and is followed by prize-giving just after 10am. The series will conclude with round three on Wednesday at Port St Francis. Entries will be taken online or at Sea Centre at the port.
