DEFENDING champion Dan Howitz, of Port Elizabeth, was in top form at the weekend to claim victory in the first round of the About IT Triathlon Summer Series held in perfect conditions between Pollok Beach and Sardinia Bay.
Howitz took the lead during the 20km bike leg after coming out of the 750m swim in third place and maintained this lead throughout the 5km trail run. He finished the sprint distance triathlon in one hour, five minutes and 53 seconds, ahead of Ryan Peter and Ryan Johnson.
Liza Bright was the fastest woman on the morning, clocking 1:14:6.
Matthew Scott won the junior category in 1:12.00, while Alec Riddle teamed up with son Jamie to win the team category.
More than 100 triathletes took part in the triathlon which continues with round two on Sunday at Pollok Beach and concludes on Boxing Day (December 26) with round three at Port St Francis.
“It was a great turnout… and bodes well for rounds two and three next week,” series director Mike Zoetmulder, of Zports, said.
