Students give children a sporting chance

SPORTS Management students at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University have donated sports equipment to the children of Island Forest Primary School in Seaview.

Final year students Buhle Dumbu, Mbali Kantu Mtana and Thando Loliwe are sportsmen who have represented the province.

The donated equipment includes soccer balls, cricket bats, hockey sticks, toys, books, clothing, school bags and water bottles.

Mtana said the initiative was part of the Human Movement Science faculty and the International Centre for Sport Studies’ (CIES) community engagement programme.

“The initiative was aimed at bringing sport to the children, to donate sport equipment to schools and to empower the teachers on basic coaching skills. The school receives no government funding and many of the children come from the informal settlement in the Seaview area where their parents are, for the most part, unemployed.”

He said the students requested assistance from local residents and businesses and then identified the school as a beneficiary.

“This is an ongoing project. It does not end here and we will ensure that the community gets what it deserves,” said Mtana.
