Cape Town triumph ends exceptional year for Grey

THE Grey High first water polo team excelled in the prestigious SACS Water Polo Festival in Cape Town at the weekend, winning the title for the first time.

All the country’s top 20 schools participated in the event, with Grey beating hosts SACS 2-1 in a tense final. Cameron Johnson, Nick Bezwick and Jeremy Ward were included in the tournament team of 15 players.

To add to Grey’s water polo successes, the u-15 team won the Ian Melliar Cup hosted by Wynberg, which is the age-group equivalent of the SACS Festival. After having lost in the pool game to Reddam, they got revenge in the final, winning 5-3.

Jason Evezard was selected as attacker of the tournament, while Matt King, Shaun King and Evezard were selected in the tournament team.

The triumph completed an exceptional year for the Grey u-15 side which saw them winning 49 out of 50 matches.Aside from the Melliar Cup, other wins included the Kingswood trophy (Eastern Cape u-15 Championships), the Port Rex Tournament (Border u-15 Championships), and the National Sterrenberg Shield.

The side scored an impressive 741 goals and had an average winning margin of 15-2 in their 50 matches.

ST Andrew’s also attended the SACS tournament and after two losses to Pretoria Boys (4-1) and Bishops (2-1), they bounced back with five wins in their next six games, beating Westville 4-1, Jeppe 3-2, KES 9-2, Selborne 8-0 and Rondebosch 3-2.

They did go down to a polished Paul Roos side 6-5 and lost their final fixture to Grey High 6-2.

The St Andrew’s u-15 team took part in the Sterrenberg tournament in East London, ending up runners-up to Grey High.
