NELSON Mandela Bay’s Herald Urban Run, hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), has helped raise more than R200000 for children’s charities with the Port Elizabeth branch of the Childhood Cancer Foundation (Choc) and the Coega Door of Hope Children’s Home as the primary beneficiaries.
The Herald Urban Run took place on September 15-16, with more than 1000 participants entering this fun charity obstacle race through the city centre, a 300% increase on last year’s participation.
All participants taking part in the Urban Run embraced the spirit of giving as they raised money for the nominated charities. Top Urban Run philanthropist for this year was Salman Ditta, of Summerstrand, who raised a whopping R6500.
“The Urban Run is a great event which complements the MBDA’s aims of bringing life back to the city, in terms of people living, working and enjoying the city surrounds,” MBDA chief executive Pierre Voges said.
“We are ecstatic with the charity contribution which the Urban Run raised this year and the spirit in which the participants support the Urban Run.”
Event organiser Mike Zoetmulder feels the event has massive growth potential.
“This is an awesome fun event which is destined to grow into one of Nelson Mandela Bay’s largest social events as it’s all about giving back while having immense fun in the city and fun is what all the participants appeared to be having,” Zoetmulder said.
“In its second year, to be able to generate more than R200000 for charity is amazing and we’re already looking forward to next year as we expect another massive increase in entries following the success of this year’s event.”
The 2012 Herald Urban Run saw participants tackling the city and 17 urban obstacles along the 10.5km route through the heart of the CBD and formed part of a festival of activities on the Donkin Reserve over the weekend.
Through the event, the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise also managed to raise more than R6000 for charity through the proceeds from the Kids Zone and the Mitchell’s Beer Garden.
The Urban Run will take place in mid-September each year with the 2013 version scheduled for September 14-15.
