Mokoena out of clash with Egypt

CAPTAIN Aaron Mokoena was a notable exclusion from the Bafana Bafana squad named yesterday to play Egypt in a crucial Group G 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Ellis Park next week.
National coach Pitso Mosimane announced a squad of 24 players for the match and said that, in Mokoena’s absence, vice-captain Steven Pienaar would assume the captaincy.
Mokoena, South Africa’s most capped player with 104 matches under his belt, was left on the bench in Bafana’s friendly match against Kenya in Rustenburg last month, with Siyabonga Sangweni and Bongani Khumalo playing as the preferred pairing in central defence and Morgan Gould as their understudy.
However, Mosimane was not prepared to give reasons why he left out the veteran defender, who plays for Portsmouth in the English Championship league.
“As much as we want to speak about the captain, we shouldn’t,” Mosimane said. – Sapa
