SHE has been operating under the radar in boxing promotion in the Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage region for many years, but Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene’s passion about the sport has finally earned her recognition.
Tsenene, 69, of Wells Estate, will be among various provincial boxing devotees to be honoured at this year’s annual Premier’s Sports Awards function at the Boardwalk on Friday.
National Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula will present awards to well- known personalities from throughout the province for their contributions and achievements in various sporting categories.
Tsenene will receive a special award, along with former South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, for her outstanding contribution to sport.
A former tavern owner, Tsenene has been involved in boxing as a promoter for more than a decade after she used to attend local boxing tournaments in the eighties to relax.
