Top women golfers for PE

SOUTH Africa’s leading women golfers will be in action in the Nedbank Eastern Cape Women’s Open Amateur Championship to be played at Humewood Golf Course from Sunday to Tuesday.
As many as eight of the country’s top 10 players have entered, including No1 Kim Williams, of Centurion, and No2 Henriette Frylinck (Waterkloof).
Local followers will remember how Williams won both the Sanlam SA Amateur Strokeplay and Matchplay events at PE Golf Club last year.
Defending ECWGA matchplay champion Tiffany Avern-Taplin (Umhlali) is also returning to Port Elizabeth in search of more honours. She currently holds 10th spot on the national rankings.
Also in the field are Walker Park’s Alana van Greunen (4th), Glendower’s Lara Weinstein (5th), Ebotse’s Nicole Garcia (6th), Cradock’s Iliske Verwey (7th) and Rustenburg’s Nicole Becker (8th).
Verwey, who formerly represented Eastern Province, is now playing out of Southern Cape. Another entrant is former local girl Tanica van As, now living in KwaZulu-Natal.
The field will play 36 holes of strokeplay on Sunday. The top 16 will qualify for the opening matchplay round on Monday morning.
