Lions’ hunt for overseas players sees Butch James signed

WORLD Cup-winning flyhalf Butch James was added to the growing Lions player roster yesterday when the union announced that he had signed for the Johannesburg club.
James, now under contract to Bath, will fulfil his commitments to the English Premier League club before moving to Gauteng in May to take up a two-year contract.
The Lions have worked cleverly in the transfer market in the off-season, picking up some tested campaigners such as scrumhalf Rory Kockott and flyhalf Andre Pretorius and exciting prospects in wing Lionel Mapoe and hooker Bandise Maku.
But James is the first high-profile signing under the ownership of billionaire investors Robert Gumede and Ivor Ichikowitz.
“When Guma/TAC decided to invest in the Lions, Ivor (Ichikowitz) and I made a commitment to enhance our young team with Springbok-quality players,” said Gumede, chairman of the Golden Lions board. – Craig Ray
