EVEN if you place it in perspective that this was largely a second-string Bulls line-up, the Southern Kings made a hugely impressive start to the rugby year when they defeated the visitors 23-7 in their pre-season friendly at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday.
In front of a crowd of around 30000, Rory Duncan’s Kings outplayed their northern opponents and led 23-0 before their defences were finally breached with a try by Courtnall Skosan.
But by then the home side had virtually wrapped up the match.
The Kings thrilled the home fans with two scintillating tries by centres Matthew Taylor- Smith and Siyanda Grey, while flyhalf Monty Dumond, after missing an early penalty, showed a deadly boot with three penalties and two conversions. – Neale Emslie
