Brooklyn boxer Mendez steals show

THE Dominican Republic’s Argenis Mendez stole the show in the boxing tournament at Carnival City on Saturday night after the main fight was declared a no-contest.
The main bout proved an anti-climax when the fight between SA’s IBF mini-flyweight champion, Nkosinathi Joyi, and Katsuman Takayama finished prematurely in the third round after an accidental clash of heads resulted in the Japanese boxer bleeding profusely from a head wound.
Under such circumstances, if the fight has not gone four rounds the champion retains his title, but the proceedings go down as a no-contest.
Fortunately there was a saving grace to the night’s proceedings in the form of the stylish exhibition of boxing from Mendez, of Brooklyn, who gave former SA champion Cassius Baloyi a boxing lesson in the junior lightweight eliminator for Mzonke Fana’s IBF title. – Sapa
