Singapore’s founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew dies at 91

Singapore’s first premier Lee Kuan Yew died in hospital on 23 March 2015, at the age of 91, the government said. Lee was hospitalized in early February with severe pneumonia, and had been on mechanical ventilation in the intensive care unit since then. ‘The prime minister is deeply grieved to announce the passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore,’ said a statement from the office of Premier Lee Hsien Loong, Lee’s son. The government declared a national period of mourning from 23 to 29 March. Lee will lie in state at Parliament House from 25 to 28 March. A state funeral will take place on March 29.
