Walmer Country Club application for rezoning of land put on hold
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality seems unlikely to approve a rezoning application by the Walmer Country Club to allow a school to be built on its grounds.
The club has already sold a portion of its land to St Christophers Private School, which wants to build a branch in Port Elizabeth.
Municipal officials said the rezoning must be refused as the club’s request was contrary to the conditions of the title deed and the Town Planning Amendment Act.
The act only allows for the club to build houses, hotels and shops on the land.
The club sold 6ha of land to the school in February for about R30-million.
It sent an application to the metro to rezone and remove restrictions on the land.
The city sold the land (erf 7005)to the club in 2007 for the development of a golf estate.
