Chaos erupted at the Kuyga Community Hall last night as ANC supporters attempted to prevent Nelson Mandela Bay mayor Athol Trollip from entering to conduct an Integrated Development Plan meeting for Ward 40.

The gate to the hall was locked as the mayoral party arrived for the 6pmmeeting.

ANC members sang inside the hall while police patrolled outside.

Trollip got the gate locks broken and minutes before 6pm a group, who identified themselves as DA members, pushed the gate open.

A scuffle ensued as ANC supporters blocked the entrance while residents some of them chanting “DA, DA” pushed and shoved.

Police fired teargas to stop a group of ANC supporters from entering.

When the meeting finally started, people covered their noses because of teargas fumes.

Trollip warned that anybody who tried to prevent the ward councilor from working at the office from today would be arrested.

He said: “This is not a party political meeting but it is about the government that is running this metro.

“I am here as the mayor to listen to the needs of the people.”

Savages! Only in it for themselves and no interest in the upliftment of their communities. Police need to start making arrests, this is no way to act – just sore losers!
