Letter: No excuse for penguin pilferers

I am outraged by the woolly-minded, emotional excuses that the penguin pilferers have proffered in their defence!

This lame, feeble-minded, anthropomorphic approach to animals does nothing to help animals themselves.

It creates a poor public image that activists then have to combat in order to get the public listen to them as anything other than crazy, fringe loonies with too much time on their hands.

Sometimes captivity is the kindest place to be – being free is not always all it is cracked up to be. To quote a very old song: “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose” . The big, wide world is not a safe, comfortable place with three square meals a day, where a penguin can raise his clutch in peace.

And while we are on the subject of doing the right thing and being kind to animals, do those men eat meat? Do they put their money where their mouth is?

Their legal team is trying to muddy the waters and garner sympathy for them by calling them “boys” and “youths”. Rubbish! They are legally adult; let us call them what they are – men. This was no prank – unless it was alcohol-fuelled.

And I seriously doubt their contrition – I doubt that they would have come forward and confessed except that their ill-conceived selfies went viral and they suddenly realised that they were in rather a lot of poo. Throw the book at them!
