Letter: SA public representatives all hypocrites

DO not tell me you are a better option than the ANC. Do not tell the people of South Africa to vote for you because you will change it for the better. Do not tell me you care for the poor and unemployed of this country.

The reason South Africa is in this economic, social and moral crisis is because most of our public representatives (opposition included) are part of the problem.

Yes, I am angry, but more saddened by the fact that while we put our trust in these people to represent us they do not – they just take care of their own personal survival.

All four of the biggest opposition parties in parliament opposed President Zuma’s salary increase and put up a big fight in parliament, but how many of them opposed your 5% increase?

Yes, Nqaba Kwankwa from the UDM and Narend Singh from the IFP did label all MPs as “hypocrites”, but those are just words. Have you, Kwankwa and Singh done anything else or agreed to something concrete, like that you will donate your salary increase to help poor communities? No, just words. Trying to gain political points from South Africans.

You all (opposition parties) voted against President Zuma’s increase of about R120 000, but how many South Africans know of the 5% increase you all got? The 5% increase of all MPs equals about R18.6-million!

That is excluding MPLs, city councillors, mayors – and if you are a chairperson of a committee, you get even more. Your salary increase in total is about 155 times more than Zuma’s increase!

Have you, Mr/Ms Public Representative, thought about what you can do with your increase? If just the opposition use their increase to help South Africans, it would be more than R7-million towards the exact people who gave you your job!

It is so easy to show how many jobs, schools, RDP houses etc. can be created/built with Zuma’s salary or Nkandla, but what about you, the opposition?

Are you truly there for the people of South Africa or just there to tell us how bad the ANC is? If you really want to work for the people, you will take your salary increase and put it back into the community you serve.

When you chose to become a public representative, you did it because you want to serve the people of South Africa. If you did it for the money, then your heart is in the wrong place. Batho Pele – People First.
