Noble venture backfires

So Paul Verryn calls for churches leaders to get out of the churches and into the streets (“Call for churches to hit streets, meet needy”, February 13). This is rather a turnaround for him.

It was he who brought the streets into the church. I had a ringside seat when the Central Methodist Church, Smal Street, Johannesburg was being built, and later had the same seat when Verryn turned what was the showcase Methodist church, into a slum that only the brave and the foolhardy dared enter.

Although his motives were noble, the results were disastrous, not only for the church building itself, but for everyone in the vicinity. I wish him better luck with his proposed new venture.

It too has noble motives.
