Remember other tragic victim

THE very sad circumstance of Jayde Panayiotou’s tragic death seems to have overshadowed another serious crime which occurred at about the same time.

I refer to the tragic death of Sonnica Kensley, a young, highly qualified and very skilled biokineticist at the St George’s Hospital Cardiac Centre.

She was out cycling with her husband on Freedom Day, April 27 and, as reported in The Herald (“Wife dies after bike horror on Bay road”, April 28), was knocked down by a motorist who was allegedly under the influence of drink at 10 in the morning and who failed to stop at the scene. He was pursued and apprehended by an alert witness.

He appeared in court and was granted bail of R1 000!

This crime is surely as serious and abhorrent as that of Jayde Panayiotou’s death, but I have not seen any report in The Herald about further legal action. Why the delay? THE accused in this case is Thomas Smith-Shedden, who is due to make his next court appearance on July 2 at which time The Herald will report on those proceedings.
