I WRITE to your newspaper to highlight a situation of mindless vandalism where the Finnis Street Sportsfield is concerned in the hopes that it can encourage our officials to take immediate action against the perpetrators and protect the facility for our people.

The sportsfield was established in 2006.

It was built and upgraded to comply with sporting codes, and to allow sportsmen and women to play on a good quality field.

This sports facility has been vandalised more than five times, with the ongoing repair bills above R2-million. This desecration must be stopped, security must be enforced, and the criminals pursued and fined, at the very least.

The thugs are breaking in and loitering with criminal intent daily. It can be said that they are robbing themselves and, of course, our potential sports lovers, in their areas from developing themselves, rising to such heights as being members of the Bafana Bafana soccer team or the Springbok rugby team.

I appeal to the community and our officials to support me, stand with me to fight the crime in our area, and put an end to criminals destroying that which is good, positive and creative, and its obvious potential for the city.
