Bill a step toward totalitarian state

AS the final signing of the Protection of State Information Bill – a terrifyingly restrictive measure characteristic of totalitarian societies such as the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, Castro's Cuba and North Korea, rather than an open democratic society – draws ever closer, the words of that great publisher Joseph Pulitzer are chillingly relevant:

"There is not a crime, there is not a dodge, there is not a trick, there is not a swindle, there is not a vice which does not live by secrecy."

Considering the ever-growing threat to the maintenance of an open society in South Africa, this quote should be at the forefront of the minds of every South African.
