Woman fight for gender parity in most other fields

IN answer to Derrick Fellows's letter on gender equality ("Stand up for gender equality!", May 28), I agree with him as regards gender parity in the nursing field. However, I would then also call for gender parity for women at all levels of society, that is women in decision-making roles, women in management, women in politics, women in sport, etc.

One thing that really irks me is the coverage of women's sports and how extraordinarily underreported they are There is an entire world of women's sports that are excluded from the sports pages.

How often do we ever have reporting on women's hockey or netball, which are two of the main women's sports in South Africa? Generally, the only sport involving women that is ever reported on the back page of a newspaper is international tennis, and that would normally be a picture of someone like Maria Sharapova or a tennis player in a skimpy outfit, which I surmise is so it would have some appeal to the male population.

There is a huge gap between opportunities, funding and media exposure given to males and females in the sporting world, and in South Africa this is not just a gap, it is a chasm.

So yes, Mr Fellows, you may call for parity in the nursing field for men, but in just about every other area in society women have to fight daily for even a semblance of equality.
