Link the fines to licence renewal

DEAR Mr Totoyi,

After reading your plans for yet another unworkable idea to collect traffic fines in the metro ("Bold new plan to collect fines", May 16), it becomes clear why the situation goes from bad to worse. Here is a workable suggestion that would be acceptable to all sides.

Link all traffic fines to the eNatis system. When a motorist renews his or her motor vehicle licence, he or she will be advised there are traffic fines linked to that vehicle. If there is a discrepancy, they have the opportunity to contest the fines.

There simple, effective and workable. One presumes some amendment to legislation may be required as well as measures put in place to guard against internal abuse of the system.
