Herald deserves accolades

IT is pleasing to see that journalistic excellence at The Herald is once again being recognised. Congratulations to reporters Michael Kimberley, Yoliswa Sobuwa and Hendrik Mphande for getting through to the finals of the 2013 Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Awards.

However, it is not only in the enterprise news and hard news categories that The Herald deserves recognition. Thank you to this daily that punches well above its weight in journalistic terms for the regular coverage that you provide to community service organisations.

It encourages those who elect to use their membership of local clubs of the internationally recognised and respected organisations like Rotary as a conduit for their community work to do even better and more. Additionally the public who support fundraising events and community service projects of various Rotary clubs in Port Elizabeth and elsewhere in the province derive comfort knowing that their donations are channelled to needy causes, institutions and individuals in an accountable and transparent manner.

I have been in the windy city on a short visit. As a long-serving Rotarian and presently president of Rotary Club Windhoek in Namibia, it made me proud to see community service projects of local Rotary clubs featured in two editions of The Herald.

Thank you, editor and reporters of The Herald, for the wonderful work that you do in educating, informing and entertaining South Africans who reside in this part of the country. Also for so obviously doing it without fear or favour. You deserve the accolades.
