NO LONGER BEST RUN MUNICIPALITY

AM I missing something? The metro council will spend R5-million to celebrate 20 years of freedom. That’s OK, of course, but not if the budgets have to be cut relating to health, human settlements, roads and storm water, sanitation, safety and security. Those departments – which need some urgent financial and management attention and which include departments where strong poverty alleviation would make a real difference – surely need every cent they can get. And on top of this we gave R92000 a month to a “supernumerary”‘ and a new metro police chief is appointed at another R1-million a year. When Paul Botha was city manager we had – I hear – R2-billion as savings, being the best run municipality in South Africa. And now?

METRO SPLURGES ON CAR HIRE

IT’S not the gravy train anymore, it’s the vehicle train! Sies!

THE money wasted on car hire could have been used to install a water filter in the Kings Beach pond.

TRIAL A CIRCUS

THE trial is more of a comedy with the witness interpreting for the interpreter, a proper circus with only clowns on show.

REPLIES TO READERS’ COMMENTS

WELL said, Rev Afrika Mhlophe! What a refreshing, truthful and erudite opinion. South Africa needs more people like you for it to prosper and shake off all the mumbo jumbo and superstition.

NOEL Julius, you clearly haven’t the foggiest idea of the law. No civilised country with a constitution in place allows you to convict a person without a trial. You haven’t seen what evidence the state or the defence has. You cannot convict a person simply because he or she pulled the trigger. Many people in South Africa have been murdered in very secure complexes – remember that FW de Klerk’s ex-wife was murdered in a secure complex. Let the trial run and leave the lawyering to those that know it.

TERRY

I REFER to Noel Julius’s letter regarding Oscar Pistorius: Oscar must be set free as he did not kill her (Reeva Steenkamp) intentionally and really thought an intruder was in his house. Get all the facts straight then you will change your opinion of him. Hope Oscar gets a fair trial.

TO Older Gentleman, what rubbish, it’s men who only show an interest in woman half their age when they, men, pass the age of 50. I gave up meeting anybody else after my husband died, when I met the men who were available to women our age.

UNSPOKEN Thoughts column by Kazeka Mashologu Kuse: I think that it’s best that Kazeka’s thoughts remain unspoken. Then she can keep her thinly disguised propaganda rhetoric about Winnie Madikizela-Mandela being a heroine and Julius Malema being some kind of sane voting alternative (“a more mature Malema” – really?) to herself. What a load of drivel.

IN growing soccer interest among youngsters, do strive to give the presently sidelined ethnic groups the belief that they too have a chance of reaching the national team.

STILL NOT AN SA CITIZEN

WHEN South Africa’s celebrating 20 years of democracy I am also celebrating 20 years in South Africa with a South African wife and kids, but am still not a second-class citizen. Why is that, Mr Zuma and the sham’affairs minister?

SNUB A DIPLOMATIC DISASTER

JACOB Zuma’s snub of the Westminster Abbey memorial service for Nelson Mandela is a diplomatic disaster. They changed the date to have him there and where does he go? To Robert Mugabe’s daughter’s wedding. Shocking misjudgment of international protocol and an insult to the memory of a greater president and human being, Nelson Mandela.

EFF WILL IMPLEMENT MANIFESTO

“PROMISES, pipe dreams”: the president of the EFF did not make any promises but a commitment to the South African voter. He said, “If we are voted into government the EFF will implement what is in its manifesto.” That is the commitment, not a promise.

WHAT ABOUT A COURTESY CALL?

SIES, metro municipality! Arriving with your clipper to disconnect my electricity. Paid diligently a huge amount to you for 25 years. Did not receive the previous month’s account so I forgot to pay it. One month! What about a courtesy call? Shocking treatment.
