NMMU staff committed to good practice

AS a proud academic at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, I feel obliged to speak out on behalf of the hundreds of staff members who happily work at this great Institution. News of Prof Velile Notshulwana's alleged plagiarism and fraudulent CV has shocked us all, especially since the academic fraternity at NMMU endeavours to prevent the very things he is accused of having done.

We're glad The Herald and NMMU have exposed this – and that justice will be done. We're less pleased, however, about being "tarred with the same brush".

The majority of NMMU's 2300 staff members are highly committed to the university, to upholding the quality of our qualifications, in striving for excellence, in producing real solutions for society's ever-changing needs and in nurturing our future leaders. I have just returned from Cape Town visiting various companies who employ our students and am once again impressed by the leading role many of them are playing, making a real impact on our nation.

We have an exciting future ahead as we strive to become one of South Africa's top universities in key fields. So please do not use one bad apple to judge us all.

Prof Jean Greyling, head of department, NMMU computing sciences
