Old Bay hotel in a poor state

WHEN visiting Central I am always saddened to see the poor state of a certain building complex situated between Bird and Cuyler streets that once years ago used to be the popular Sunnyside Hotel.

Friends living next door to the property mentioned that demolition of this building was started in November last year, and today it is now just an abandoned and dusty eyesore, an embarrassment and real health concern to the residents and office workers in the area. The front of the building is boarded up and the back entrance that fronts on to Cuyler Street is now used as a public toilet and refuse dump.

Word has it that the MBDA is spending more that R10-million in upgrading Bird Street. I am sure that with a bit of healthy persuasion by the local authorities the owner of this unsightly property could be persuaded to do the right thing for the city and its Heritage Trail by speedily getting proactive and remedying this problem once and for all.
