Guards in cold – residents too

IN FEBRUARY workmen started digging up huge, long trenches all around Humewood Extension.

I’m not sure whether it is the municipality or its contractors. There are no signs up anywhere as to why they are digging or what they are doing or who the contractors are.

The workmanship is so messy and untidy. There is no safety tape around these holes. Anyone could fall into them in the dark.

There were pipes lying on the grass and they had security staff there 24 hours a day, seven days a week to prevent the pipes from being stolen.

Well, the pipes were buried and the security guards are gone. Now the security guards are back … maybe they are trying to steal the pipes as the holes have not been filled in yet. I’m not sure what security company it is but these poor security guards are suffering a complete violation of human rights.

They have to stand there in all the elements with absolutely no shelter whatsoever. There are no toilet facilities for them either.

Who is responsible for all of this? Who abuses people like this? They need to provide shelter, a toilet and chairs for the staff.

Surely as residents of this small neighbourhood we could be told what is going on.

I wonder how long this will go on for?

Marcelle Wentworth, Humewood Extension
