I DUG out this old poster (attached) showing a picture by Peter Magubane of the mass funeral of the 68 victims of the 1960 Sharpeville massacre.
“Never again!”, says the headline, and the 1996 poster explains that the Constitutional Assembly “is finalising the Bill of Rights for the new Constitution to make sure this never happens again”.
Somewhat of a forlorn hope, I fear, following last week’s Marikana mine massacre. And who knows what violence lies ahead in the run-up to Mangaung?
