Homeless man gets R1.6m for tip-off to cops

A HOMELESS man has received a $100 000 (R1.6-million) reward for helping police catch two men on the run.

Matthew Hay-Chapman, from San Francisco, gave the police a tip-off about the wanted men who had escaped from an Orange County jail six days earlier.

He spotted the stolen white van being used by fugitives Hossein Nayeri, 37, and Jonathan Tieu, 20, whom he had recognised from photographs shown on news reports, in January.

The fugitives sparked a manhunt which ended when Hay-Chapman thought someone was sleeping in a van parked outside a Whole Foods store and alerted the police.

Hay-Chapman said he would use the money for a fresh start and also give some of it to his children.
