A wildlife photographer has described the terrifying moment a drunk gorilla took a swing at him as he snapped away at his family on the slopes of Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains.
Frenchman Christophe Courteau, 46, was on his knees capturing images of the group in Volcanoes National Park when the 250kg alpha male unexpectedly charged at him.
Courteau said that after hitting him “like a rugby player”, the gorilla pushed past him and ran through the forest to chase away another male who was trying to attract a female in his group.
“All the members of this family were quite excited on this day, probably due to the consumption of the bamboo stems, which cause the gorillas to become extremely drunk and excitable,” Courteau, from Brittany, said.
He said that, thankfully, he was not the gorilla’s intended target. “He pushed me out the way . . . like if I was not there.”
