Frail mugging victim touches hearts

The plight of a frail, near-blind mugging victim touched British hearts Friday, with thousands of pounds in donations pouring in for 67-year-old Alan Barnes after an attack that left him with broken bones and too afraid to return to his home in the north-east city of Gateshead.

More than 14,000 pounds (21,000 dollars) has been raised to find fresh accommodation for measles-victim Barnes, who stands 1.3 metres tall and weighs less than 40 kilograms.

Donor Michael Longstaff said he was looking forward to seeing Barnes back on his feet.

“Just to see you confidently walking in your home town would be a sign to everyone that bullies never prosper,” he said.
