England’s one-day cricket captain Eoin Morgan has reportedly been the victim of a £35 000 (R610 000) extortion bid over a brief relationship with an Australian woman.
On the eve of England’s TriSeries clash with Australia, the England Cricket Board (ECB) revealed it was contacted by a man demanding the money before the match – scheduled for a 3am UK time (5am SA time) start today.
Morgan is said to have had a fling with an Australian woman five years ago, while the suspect – identified as a resident of Hobart where England were due to start playing early today – is the new boyfriend of the woman.
It is claimed the boyfriend has a phone with embarrassing details of the affair, including a video of Morgan’s relationship with the woman.
The ECB passed on the blackmail bid to Scotland Yard and police are said to have tracked down the individual, according to the Australian Herald Sun, and identified him as workplace safety consultant Nick Emery.
ECB managing director Paul Downton said: “There were references to a relationship Eoin Morgan had five years ago with a single Australian lady.
“It was a brief relationship five years ago and what appears to be a fairly deliberate attempt to extort a sum of money from the ECB.
“The individual . . . demanded the money be paid before the first ball was played [today]. The ECB will not be pressing charges and the matter is now closed.”
