A RARE species of nautilus, a marine mollusc, has been found by researchers for the first time in 31 years.

It has been suggested that the Allonautilus scrobiculatus could be the rarest animal in the world. The elusive creature is part of the nautilus family, relatives of squid and cuttlefish.

They have inhabited the planet for 500 million years and survived two mass extinctions, yet little is known about them.

This species was discovered in 1984 in Papua New Guinea by Peter Ward of the University of Washington.

This summer, Ward and his team caught the mollusc on film again by using bait suspended between 150 and 400 metres below the surface. – The Telegraph
