Plastic jugs and tumblers have replaced glass at Nelson Mandela Bay council meetings following last month’s dramatic brawl in which two councillors were injured when glass jugs were hurled about.
Security was tight on Thursday as councillors and members of the public were scanned for weapons.
Everyone entering the chambers at the Woolboard Exchange Building were issued with access cards.
An ANC councillor, who tried to enter the chamber with his cup of coffee, was quickly stopped by security officers who said glass was not allowed inside the meeting.
He had to finish his coffee and leave the cup behind before entering the chambers.
All the political parties touched on last month’s incident, saying the violence should never be repeated.
They all took responsibility for what transpired.
